What is Social Engineering and How Do I Protect My Business from It?

Social engineering is on the rise, and that is just a fancy term for bad guys trying to steal your money!  Your best defense is to be on guard and confirm the legitimacy of all payment requests.

1)      Implement Controls on Payment Authorization – Keeping more than one person involved in all payment transactions will add a second set of eyes to confirm the legitimacy of the request.

2)      Verify the Vendor – Require vendor onboarding for additional scrutiny and confirmation of legitimacy.  Pay only documented vendors.

3)      Use MFA for email and financial systems – Multi Factor Authentication is a higher level of protection for your systems.

4)      Ensure that all Staff follows standardized workflows and reports any suspicious requests.  Conduct Staff training on the latest phishing indicators and impersonation scenarios.

U   Use Anti Fraud Ink on checks - use special ink on any mailed checks that cannot be erased/modified.

According to RPS, there were over $3billion in losses in 2025 and the number keeps growing.  Don’t become part of the statistics!

Things to watch for:

-          Emails –thieves are becoming more sophisticated which makes the threat harder to detect.  Avoid clicking email links.  Call directly to confirm legitimacy of the request.

-          Phone calls – voices are being cloned and may sound like someone you may know.  Always directly confirm any uncommon requests following any call.

-          Zoom meetings – avoid online meetings with any irregular parties.

-          Requests for Wire Transfers – watch for spoofed requests or unusual bank accounts

-          Synthetic voices – as the theft sophistication evolves, watch for multi-channel impersonation which may use email and phone and online meetings.

Thanks to RPS (Risk Placement Services) for their recent Client Advisory highlighting this growing concern. https://www.rpsins.com/products-and-programs/cyber-insurance/

Flood Waters are Rising - Don't Be Caught Without Insurance

Anywhere it rains, it can flood. I often hear people say that it could never flood where they are, and I have learned to never say never.  Areas that never flooded before have been flooding due to nearby developments or natural/man-made changes in the geographic area. Even if you live in an area of that you think isn’t at risk, preparation is just as critical as with other types of exposures.

Flood damage is typically not covered by your business property insurance, homeowners or renters insurance. There are specialized flood insurance programs offered by FEMA and many private companies to assist with repairs and replacing your structure or contents due to damage caused by rising water.  Depending on your proximity to a water source such as a river or tidal waters, your rate could be high unless you mitigate the possibility of damage.

When you allow water to pass through the foundation or ground floor by the use of venting, you reduce the possibility of structural damage by relieving hydrostatic water pressure.  Elevated structures and elevated home equipment, such as air conditioners and generators, are more protected from rising water. Land grading, storm drains, and cleared gutters help to divert water from around your structure.

Flooding will cause emotional stress along with physical hazards, so be mindful of the well-being of you and your family during the aftermath. Floodwater is often contaminated by oil, gasoline or sewage, not to mention displaced animals, so avoid contact as much as possible.  Make sure your city’s water supply is safe to drink.  Boil-orders may be issued.

If you don’t have flood insurance, contact a local insurance agent to obtain it, as there are waiting periods before coverage becomes effective. Be sure to plan ahead, and never let your insurance coverage lapse.  There are penalties for losing your coverage, and your rate could increase by thousands per year to replace the coverage. Yesterday, I assisted someone who had lost their coverage and they had been paying $900, and now the rate is over $3000 for the same coverage level.  The flood insurance premium is based on your specific property including the distance from a body of water, the type and frequency of historical flooding in your area, the elevation of the lowest floor of your structure, and the estimated replacement cost of your building.  Each building needs to be insured separately in most cases.

Flooding is one of the most common hazards in the U.S. Being prepared for any emergency is crucial for the safety of you and your family. Don’t be caught off guard!

Avoid the pain of not using an insurance professional agent advisor! Ask questions before a claim.

As insurance professionals at SouthGroup Insurance, we see policies every day. We see claims that are covered. Claims that aren’t. People who discover they have great coverage when they need it most…and people who find out after something happens that the coverage they thought they had isn’t there.

And lately, there’s one thing we keep seeing:

People taking insurance advice from everyone except an insurance professional.

The neighbor over the fence says, “Oh, homeowners covers that.”
Your friend says, “You don’t need flood insurance—you’re not in a flood zone.”
Someone on Facebook says, “My insurance paid for mine!”
And somebody’s cousin’s best friend says, “Just get the cheapest policy. They’re all basically the same.” 😳

Folks…they are NOT all the same.

What covered your neighbor’s claim may not cover yours. Their policy may have different endorsements, exclusions, deductibles, limits, or even an entirely different insurance company.

And please—“full coverage” is not a magic insurance policy. 😂 There is no such thing as "full coverage"!

Some of the questions we hear at SouthGroup:

Do I really need flood insurance? Why is my wind deductible so high? Does homeowners cover my jewelry? Is my camper covered while I’m towing it? What happens if someone gets hurt on my property? Does my policy cover water backup? Why is my neighbor paying less than me?

These are exactly the conversations you should be having with an insurance professional who can actually look at YOUR policy and YOUR situation.

Insurance is complicated. Experience matters. Asking questions before the claim matters.

So by all means, chat with the fence gossiper down the street about the weather, football, and what somebody did at the neighborhood cookout. 😂

But when it comes to protecting your home, vehicles, business, and everything you’ve worked for…

Talk to an insurance professional. At SouthGroup, we’re here to help. 💚

Insurance Tips for 2026 - Questions - Answers - Average Costs of Home Insurance - Highest Rates Insurance Companies - Independent Insurance Advisors

    • What is the average cost of insurance in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and other Coastal States?

Cost of Insurance: The cost of insurance will vary based on the size, age, and location of your home.

Newer Home Construction: Newer homes will have the lowest fire and wind insurance rates because of the compliance with stricter building codes that ensure the home will be more resilient against extreme weather conditions such as tornados and hurricanes.  For a 2000 sq ft home built in 2026, SouthGroup Insurance can provide rates averaging between $1500-$2500 per year.

Older Homes with Updates: Older homes with a new roof will provide the lowest cost for insurance with recent updates on plumbing and electrical.  The insurance companies will inspect homes for liability hazards and existing damage requiring repair.  Any trees near the home must be trimmed back at least 3 feet from the structure for the protection of the home.  In 2026, SouthGroup Insurance has markets for a 2000 sq ft home with a new roof and recent electrical and plumbing updates with estimated cost of $2500-$3500.

Rental Homes: Rental Homes are easily able to be insured and we are able to provide protection for investment owners.  Long term rentals are less costly to insure than short term rentals.  SouthGroup Insurance has markets providing insurance policies in the range of $2000-$3000 for fire coverage including wind exposures.

Commercial Property: SouthGroup Insurance has a number of options for the protection of commercial buildings and businesses. Construction type and building strength are major factors in insurance rating.

Flood Insurance – SouthGroup Insurance recommends flood insurance for all properties.  Anywhere is rains, it can flood.  Multiple markets in addition to NFIP provide protection for this very valuable coverage.  The cost to repair even a few inches of flood water in your home will exceed $25,000!  Flood insurance is highly recommended even for a “preferred” flood zone.

    • Who is the highest-rated Insurance Provider near me?

Great Insurance Companies in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida include Property Insurance Company of America, Orion 180, Coastal American, and Lloyds of London and other companies are offered through SouthGroup Insurance. www.southgroupgulfcoast.com 228-466-4498

Non-Admitted Insurance Companies – SouthGroup Insurance also offers financially sound coverage through non-admitted carriers who do not have rates filed with the state and therefore are not as highly regulated, but this also means they are not protected by state funds. Niche markets such as coastal regions rely heavily on non-admitted carriers because they are able to offer better rates and individually price on specific exposures.

How long does it take to get insurance? – SouthGroup Insurance is high tech and we are able to efficiently provide quotes from multiple companies and handle transactions in the method you prefer – face to face or electronically.  A meeting for any questions or reviewing and signing applications generally takes 15-30 minutes.  We have payment options and we work with mortgage holders if your insurance is escrowed with your monthly mortgage payment.

SouthGroup Insurance  www.southgroupgulfcoast.com (888) 378-9412

    • What qualifications should I look for in a local Insurance Agent and Advisor?

Insurance Advisor Qualifications – Always use a professional.  We see many sad endings with consumers who setup their own coverage level online, and then they are terribly disappointed when they need to make a claim and their coverage was setup incorrectly. The cheapest insurance is not always to best protection, and a Trusted Advisor will give you the straight scoop and will be there to advocate for you in the event of a claim.  Southgroup Insurance is an award winning agency with local professional agents and advisors who work to protect you and offer annual options for the best available insurance coverage at the lowest available rates.

Insurance Company Qualifications – you have many options for good home insurance companies.  Always choose a financially sound company with the financial strength to be able to pay claims in the event of losses.  Seek AMBest A-rated carriers or Demotech A-rated insurance companies which are more regionally based, but still good options for coverage.  Admitted carriers have rates controlled by the Department of Insurance in the state and are monitored for financial soundness.

Smart Insurance Considerations for Your Business

If you are starting a new business or expanding, it is good idea to review your risks and exposures.  Some risks, such as theft, you can address with a good security system, but acts of nature may be out of your control and are best covered with insurance.

Act of Nature Exposures:

Property Insurance provides building, and business personal property protection.  This includes office equipment, computers, inventory or tools and pays claims for fire, vandalism, theft, smoke damage etc.  You may also want to consider business interruption/loss of earnings insurance coverage to protect your earnings if the business is unable to operate.  Commercial Auto Insurance protects a company’s vehicles and any vehicles that carry employees, products or equipment.

Human Exposures:

General Liability Insurance provides both defense and damages if you, your employees or your products or services cause or are alleged to have caused Bodily Injury or Property Damage to a third party.  Worker's Compensation coverage provides wage replacement and medical benefits payments to employees who are injured on the job. Professional Liability Insurance offers defense and damages for failure to or improperly render professional services.  This protection is critical for any professionals such as lawyers, accountants, consultants, agents, and any profession providing services. Directors and Officers Insurance covers the directors and officers of a company against their actions that may affect the profitability or operations of the company. Umbrella Insurance extends an already existing insurance policy and covers beyond the regular policies. Employee Benefits are ancillary coverages that provide benefits for your working staff and their families.  There are many options: Health, dental, vision, cancer, accident, disability, and life insurance for your team.

External Exposures:

Data Breach Coverage/Cyber Liability provides protection in the event of data loss of sensitive or non-public information and all of the compliance requirements and legal action necessary following a breach.  With all of the spam and phishing schemes prevalent today, this coverage protects you and your customers.

A less costly insurance option when you are starting out may be a Business Owner's Policy (BOP).  Often, BOP’s will include business interruption insurance, property insurance, vehicle coverage, liability insurance, and crime insurance- and you can tailor it to your specific needs.

Be aware that coverage for your business will not protect your personal use, and your personal policies will not protect business use, so consult your agent to be sure you are properly protected.

May 6-7 Storm Response and Claims Tips - Mississippi Insurance Department

May 6-7 Storm Response and Claims Tips

JACKSON, Miss. — If your home was damaged in the May 6-7 storms, now is the time to take action. The Mississippi Insurance Department (MID) suggests that you know your deductible, assess your damages, and then determine whether you need to file a claim with your insurance company.

If you need assistance with an insurance question or claim, call MID at 601-359-3569 or

1-800-562-2957, email consumer@mid.ms.gov or visit www.mid.ms.gov

Follow these steps when filing a claim:

·     Prepare to file an insurance claim by gathering all relevant policy numbers.

·     File your claim as soon as possible. Your policy may require that you make the notification within a certain time period.

·     Be aware that if a widespread disaster has occurred, the company may set up special procedures.

·     Be sure you cooperate fully with the insurance company. Ask what documents, forms, and data you will need to file a claim.

·     Keep a record of all conversations with insurance companies, creditors, or relief agencies.

·     If you are not staying on the property, make sure your insurance representative knows where and how to contact you.

·     If your home is damaged to the extent that you can’t live there, ask your insurance company if you have coverage for additional living expenses.

·     Take photographs/video of the damage. Inventory your home for damaged or lost items before your adjustor arrives. This will speed up your claim process.

·     Make the repairs necessary to prevent further damage to your property (cover broken windows, leaking roofs, and damaged walls).

·     Don’t have permanent repairs made until your insurance company has inspected the property and you have reached an agreement on the cost of repairs.

·     Be prepared to provide the claims adjuster with records of any improvements you made before the damage.

·     Maintain any damaged personal property for the adjuster to inspect.

·     Ask the adjuster for an itemized explanation of the claim settlement offer.

·     Be patient and assist claims adjusters assigned to your case. Small losses may be settled quickly; extensive claims will take longer.

·     Save all receipts, including those from the temporary repairs covered by your insurance policy.

What Insurance Do I Need in My 60s and 70s?

Your 60s are a time to enjoy the rewards of decades of hard work—but they also come with new financial and health considerations. As you enter your 70s, your insurance needs shift from income protection to preserving your health, assets, and legacy. As retirement approaches or begins, insurance becomes a vital part of protecting your lifestyle, your loved ones, and your legacy. Here’s a guide to the key insurance needs for this stage of life:

1. Medicare and Supplemental Health Insurance

Most Americans become eligible for Medicare at age 65. While Medicare covers many healthcare costs, it doesn’t cover everything. Consider a Medigap policy to help with deductibles, copays, and services not covered by traditional Medicare. Review your options annually to ensure your plan fits your evolving health needs.

2. Long-Term Care Insurance

The likelihood of needing long-term care increases with age. Long-term care insurance helps cover the cost of assisted living, nursing homes, or in-home care—expenses that can quickly deplete retirement savings. Purchasing coverage in your early 60s can help lock in lower premiums and broader benefits. Whole Life Insurance and Annuities may provide needed future funding for health needs.

3. Life Insurance

If you still have financial dependents or want to leave a legacy, life insurance remains important. Permanent life insurance can also be used for estate planning or to cover final expenses. If you no longer need coverage, consider whether surrendering or converting your policy makes sense.

4. Homeowners and Auto Insurance

Ensure your home and auto policies reflect current values and offer sufficient liability protection. If your home is paid off, you may be tempted to reduce coverage—but maintaining full protection is wise, especially if you plan to age in place.

5. Umbrella Insurance

Umbrella insurance provides extra liability coverage beyond your home and auto policies. It’s a smart way to protect your retirement savings from unexpected lawsuits or claims.

6. Travel Insurance

If retirement means more travel, consider travel insurance for trip cancellations, medical emergencies abroad, and lost luggage. It’s a small investment for peace of mind while exploring the world.

Final Thoughts Your 60s and 70s are about enjoying life while safeguarding your financial future. Reviewing and adjusting your insurance portfolio ensures you’re prepared for life’s uncertainties and can focus on what matters most—health, family, and freedom.
