National Drive Safely Week

In support of Drive Safely Work Week, Zurich, a leading insurer shared an interactive video “Drive focused, drive safe,” for consumers and businesses.  https://www.brainshark.com/zurich/DriveSafe

“It is senseless and tragic that lives are being lost for the sake of a phone call or a text, personal or business-related,” said Armand Fernandez, Chief Risk Engineering Officer, Zurich Services Corporation. “In the business world alone, there have been numerous vicarious liability cases that resulted in multi-million dollar settlements and caused reputational damage for the liable company. Senior leaders and business owners should communicate and reinforce the need for focused driving without the use of electronic communication devices.”

For your safety, the video reminds us to not drive distracted.  Just a split second of distraction can result in tragedy and a life of pain.

How to Buy Auto Insurance - It's NOT All About Price!

Onlineautoinsurance.com shared some very good advice in their article on "Price Is Just One Component of Quality Auto Insurance".   It's best to search for good value rather than pay good money for a policy that will not protect you when you have a claim.  Savvy consumers should be certain that they are dealing with a reputable company with a strong financial background and good claims service.

Purchasing coverage from a cheap auto insurance company may satisfy state requiremements, but it does you no good if your policy won't cover your damages resulting from an accident.  The National Association of Insurance Comissioners (NAIC) recognizes that state minimums are "generally low" and that "the extra cost of higher coverage tends to be relatively low."

Consumers can obtain financial ratings of insurance carriers from http://www.ambest.com/.  Companies with an "A" rating are more financially sound than those with a "B" and so forth.

The Value of an Agent - Saves You Time and MONEY!

As the massive healthcare changes are pushed through our country, your agent will be even more critical in helping you find policies that meet your needs --- and your budget.  Trusted Choice agents are extensively trained to help individuals and businesses obtain the coverages that are right for them.  The Congressional Budget Office states that agents often "handle the responsibilities that larger firms generally delegate to their human resources departments -- such as finding plans and negotiating premiums, providing information about the selected plans, and processing enrollees."

The National Association of Health Underwriters noted that agents have been made "punching bags" in the media.  Time magazine   and Kaiser Health News  are forecacsting the demise of agents ... but don't believe it

Your agent provides personalized service and assists you with the complexities of the insurance contract.  You wouldn't make legal transactions without the advice of an attorney!  You wouldn't agree to surgery without consulting a professional!  Why would you enter into a contract from a computer or 800 number or buy insurance in a box?  Your agent is trained to understand coverages and can assist you in your decisions throughout the changes of your life - purchasing your first car, getting married, buying a home, having children, buying expensive toys  .... your agent is with you through it all and lives in your community and is there when you need them providing Protection When You Need It Most.

If you are in Mississippi, Lousiana, or Alabama contact your Trusted Choice agent, Treutel Insurance - http://http//www.treutel.com  , Angelyn at Treutel Insurance. Do You Know What Your Home Insurance Really Covers?

WOW! According to a survey conducted by MetLife, 31% of Americans don’t know how much their home insurance coverage is, according to an Insurance Literacy survey. Many don’t know the difference between replacement cost and market value. Most believe their policy will pay “full cost” to rebuild their home after a major loss, and they don’t understand how the deductible applies.

More than half stated that they would rather pay more than not be covered for a loss. The BEST VALUE is  to select coverage that meets your needs, instead of just seeking the lowest price. Your Trusted Choice agent can help you get value for the money you pay.

Did you know - you have options available to protect the data and programs on your mobile devices?
Did you know – your college kids living on campus may be covered under your current home policy?
Did you know – earth movement and earthquake is not typically covered under a home policy and may require an endorsement or a separate policy?
Did you know – water or sewer backup into your home is typically not covered without adding an endorsement?
Did you know – there are limitations on your home policy for jewelry and collectibles?

Your Trusted Choice agent will spend time with you and explain what your policy really covers. Insurance is a complex contract and NOT something you can buy “in a box”, even though advertisers try to convince you to believe this.

If you are in Mississippi, Lousiana, or Alabama contact your Trusted Choice agent, Treutel Insurance - http://http//www.treutel.com  , Angelyn at Treutel Insurance. Lessons Learned from Hurricane Katrina

The Insurance Information Institute offers advice on how to be prepared for the next Katrina, as we commemorate the 5th anniversary of the death and devastation from that horrific storm.  Certainly the hurricane was a major catastrophe, but almost as bad, many individuals and businesses suffered a second tragedy after the storm .... because they were not properly insured.

LESSONS LEARNED:
1) Be sure you have flood insurance
2) Businesses need businesss interuption coverage.
3) Strengthen your property  NOW with wind and flood mitigation upgrades and you will SAVE MONEY on your current home and business insurance (i.e.roof enhancements, windows and door protection, clear overhanging limbs and trees within 15 feet of your home, elevate low-lying structures and equipment, etc)
A great guide is located on the Mississippi Windstorm Underwriting website (www.msplans.com/MWUA) under the MWUA Retrofit Mitigation Guidelines link).  Other excellent information is available at the Institute for Business and Home Safety website (http://www.disastersafety.org/) with downloads on Fortified structures.
4) Take a current inventory of your belongings for an easier claim process (i.e. use your camera or FLIP to take pictures or use free inventory software from III.
5) Have a disaster preparedness plan, so that you can quickly get "back into business".
6) Review your policies with your Trusted Choice Insurance Agent to ensure your property and content values are updated, so that you are not underinsured.
7) For your safety, follow the advice of the officials if you are told to evacuate.  Some policies even offer a limited reimbursement program for mandatory evacuations.  Check your policy.

How Your Lifestyle Impacts Your Auto Insurance

Insurance Journal just published an interesting article titles "Drivers Beware: Lindsay Lohan Offers Lessons in Auto Insurance".

The article shares how risky behavior impacts your insurability and your rates.  Using Lindsey Lohan as an example, with 2 DUIs, an at-fault accident, a single 24 year old female driving a convertible in California would pay over $7400 every six months for auto insurance.  A driver with a clean driving record would only pay around $2000 every six months.  Quite a difference!

Risky behavior also could impact life insurance rates.  So the moral of the story is to work diligently to keep your driving record clean and keep good credit to obtain the most favorable insurance rates. A DUI can stay on your record for 10 years!

HURRICANE SEASON - What happens when oil is in flood water???

Thankfully, BEFORE the actual event, FEMA has issued guidance on on the looming issue of oil and water claims which could result from a hurricane surge in the Gulf. FEMA has issued Bulletin W-10065 to clarify coverage under these circumstances (attached).

Coverage for Commercial buildings and contents damaged by pollutants is limited to $10,000. Coverage for Residential buildings and contents is only limited by the selected policy limits and is limited to direct physical damage.

Coverage is only provided for structures. There is no coverage for grounds or soil damage. There is no coverage for special removal methods used to comply with local ordinances.

Flooding (and anything carried in with the water, such as oil) is typically EXCLUDED from home and propoerty policies, so be certain you have flood insurance to protect your assets.  And remember that in most cases, there is a 30 day waiting period for flood coverage to begin, and you must purchase DWELLING and CONTENTS coverage separately.  Your Trusted Choice agent (http://www.treutel.com/) can assist you in placing flood coverage.

Hurricane Season is Here - Is Your Insurance Ready???

OK - It's back.  We all know the drill.  Hurricane season is upon us and we need to be ready --- again.  Let's pray that the meteorologists are wrong, and that our season will be non-eventful .... but let's be prepared for the worst.  Don't let your insurance situation become a SECOND disaster after a hurricane.

1) FLOOD DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED UNDER YOUR HOME OR FIRE POLICY.  You need a SEPARATE policy for each structure on your property.  There is a 30 DAY WAITING period for most flood insurance policies.  Contact Treutel Insurance for this valuable coverage!

2) Make or request a summary of your insurance coverages.  Be sure that your coverages are adequate and that your mortgage / lienholders are accurate.  Contact Treutel Insurance for needed assistance.

3) Make personal preparations for your home and business, and email Treutel Insurance with your contact information if you must evacuate.  This will expedite the claims processing.

4) Following a storm or any extreme weather, take pictures, make a list of damaged items with estimated pricing, and DON'T THROW ANYTHING AWAY until an adjuster has seen it.  Your adjuster will review which items are covered under your policy.

5) If you are in Mississippi, Lousiana, or Alabama contact your Trusted Choice agent, Treutel Insurance - http://www.treutel.com//, Angelyn at Treutel Insurance.  You can reach us by email:info@treutel.com, phone:228-467-5662, fax:228-466-4314, FaceBook, Twitter, or LiveChat:chat.livechime.com/treutel/blog or through our 24/7 Client Service Portal.

The Right Way to Buy Insurance

Everday we are bombarded with print ads or popups online trying to get our insurance business.  When you shop for insurance, you have many options through online avenues or an agent.

Online information may be able to assist with reseaching coverages and pricing at your convenience.  However, making a bad decision on your insurance could be very costly if you end up with inadequate coverage and you have a loss.

A professional insurance agent can help you navigate through the complexities of insurance shopping, in the same way your CPA assists you with taxes, or your lawyer works with you on legal issues.  A Trusted Choice agent is an educated, consumer-oriented, advocate for their clients.  They do the legwork of researching and locating options for pricing, and they can advise you on appropriate levels of coverage for your best protection.

Be sure that you:
•Choose an insurance policy with a secure and trusted insurance company.

•Choose a company that always answers your insurance quote and insurance policy questions specifically and accurately to avoid any gaps in coverages.

•Don't forget to ask the agent to go over all the insurance discounts available to you.

•Make sure you understand your insurance policy.

Anywhere It Rains, It Can Flood - Flood Safety Awareness Week

Last year there were more than 5600 floods in the US with property damage in excess of $5.6 billion.  In the last 5 years, there were over 26,000 floods exceeding $198 billion in damage affecting EVERY STATE IN THE US.  This week is National Flood Safety Awareness Week (March 15-19).  FEMA has developed an informative website to help consumers understand the risk, protect family and homes, and recovery if needed.

The cost of flood damage is severe - 2 inches of flood water will cost $7800 for repairs; 12 inches will cost your almost $19,000;  and 18 inches will set you back over $26,000.

If your home is in an area that does not typically flood, the insurance rates are less than $1/day - only $257 for $100,000 in coverage and only $348 for $250,000 in coverage.  For less than the cost of buying pizza each month, you can have the peace of mind of protection from a flood loss.

If you need flood insurance or assistance with your insurance needs or want to save money on insurance, contact Angelyn at Treutel Insurance Agency, http://www.treutel.com/, your Trusted Choice. Strange Scientific Research

Imagine conducting a study to determine which is worse – being hit over the head with a full beer bottle or an empty one? As it turns out, empty bottles are ‘sturdier’ because of the air pressure in the full bottles. Good to know.

Reader’s Digest reviewed several scientific studies that were, well, quite odd which made for fun reading.

Just in case of chemical-warfare, you may want to own a brassiere containing air-filters to use as a facemask (I will leave it to your imagination how that may work : ). Another discovery is that cows need affection – if they have a name, they produce more milk. And did you know that bacteria from a giant panda’s excretions can reduce kitchen waste – who thinks of these things ??? Check out these and other fun inventions at www.readersdigest.com/inventions.

And when you are ready for a serious discussion and assistance with your insurance needs or to save money on insurance, contact Angelyn at Treutel Insurance Agency, http://www.treutel.com/, your Trusted Choice. Avoiding Insurance Mistakes and Save Money Too

With the beginning of the new year, and New Year's resolutions, the Insurance Information Institute has shared some ways to avoid insurance problems and save some money.

1) Your home should be insured to its Replacement Cost (estimated cost to rebuild) and not to the current market value (what it would sell for on the Real Estate market).  Underinsuring your home may lead to penalties in the event of a claim.
TO SAVE MONEY:  Consider increasing your deductible to save insurance expense.

2) Select your insurance company by its service and financial soundness and NOT only on price.  You need a Trusted company who will be available to respond to a claim quickly and fairly.

3) Get Flood Insurance.  Home policies specifically exclude coverage for "rising water".  Anywhere it rains, it can flood.

4) Purchase adequate liability coverage on your autos.  The state minimums are not sufficient to protect your assets.  You should carry at least $100,000 liability limits, and if you own a home, at least $300,000.
TO SAVE MONEY:  Consider deleting comprehensive and collision coverage which pays to repair your vehicle in the event of an at-fault accident.

5) Purchase renters insurance to protect your belongings and provide liablity coverage in case someone gets hurt in your home/apartment.
TO SAVE MONEY:  Look for companies that provide multi-policy discounts.

Your Trusted Choice agent, http://www.treutel.com/, can provide you with multiple quotes from multiple carriers and advise you on coverages and available credits. Every day we work with our clients to provide better coverage and save them money! Contact us for a free-no-obligation quote. Reach us via CHAT, EMAIL, PHONE:228-467-5662, FAX:228-466-4314, or visit us at 401 Hwy 90 in Bay St Louis MS.
