Got Toys? How to protect boats, atv, rv motorcycles and more - Proper insurance protection

Having toys is plenty of fun unless something goes wrong.  When you make an investment in motorcycles, boats, golf carts or ATVs, you should be aware of your legal requirements and liability exposures.

Legal requirements for your toys:

-          Motorcycles – you will need a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement which requires passing a written knowledge and skills test, and a motorcycle safety course is recommended.  Mississippi enforces the wearing of helmets for both driver and riders.   Your motorcycle must be street legal to ride on road.  Insurance is required. For more information, contact the Mississippi Department of Public Safey.

-          Boats – in Mississippi to legally operate a vessel, a Boating License and  passing a boating education course is required by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.  Boats are required to have Personal Flotation Devices, Sound Devices, Lights, Fire Extinguishers, Visual Distress Signals, Registration and Certificate of Number during all boat operations. Insurance is required.  Contact the Department of Marine Resources for more information.

-          Golf Carts  -  Registration with your city is generally required to operate a golf cart on public roads. Needed safety equipment includes headlamps, brake lights, turn signals, red reflectors, seatbelts, mirrors and a sound alert such as a horn. Golf Carts must remain on low speed roadways and adhere to all traffic laws and street signs.  Insurance is required for on-road use. For compliance requirements, contact your local County or City office.

-          ATVs – ATV’s are designed exclusively for off-road use and cannot be operated on public property or on a public road.  Helmets and Safety Courses are recommended.  Drivers should be over the age of 16. For more information, contact the Mississippi State Extension Service.

Insurance on your toys is beneficial for many reasons including:

-              Repair or Replacement – Your toy could be stolen or accidently damaged during play, and insurance will help cover the cost to repair or replace, as long as comprehensive  and collision endorsements are included on your policy.  There is an additional cost for this protection.

-              Liability– Insurance provides a financial response for accidents where you may be deemed at-fault and another party is injured or there is resulting property damage.

-              Uninsured/Underinsured – This coverage would protect you in an accident where you are injured or your property is damaged and the other party does not have adequate coverage.  This coverage is highly recommended.

-              Medical Payments – for injuries sustained at play for you or your passenger(s), medical payments coverage is very beneficial and helps cover medical deductibles when coordinated with health insurance benefits.

Consult with a knowledgeable insurance agent for the best available protection and to understand the options, terms and conditions of your policy.
